CURRICULUM STRUCTURE

Candidates are required to complete eight 9 credit courses, including three 9 credit compulsory courses and a capstone experience in accordance with the regulations and syllabuses for this degree.

  1. Capstone course:

    • LLAW6135 Alternative Dispute Resolution

  2. Compulsory courses for all students:
    Three (3) of the eight (8) courses are compulsory, including:

    • LLAW6161 Mediation

    • LLAW6138 Arbitration Law

    • LLAW6157 Arbitration Practice, Procedure & Drafting

  3. Compulsory Non-law courses:
    Students without a Bachelor of Laws or an equivalent qualification must also complete the following three (3) courses:

    • LLAW6160 Legal System and Methods

    • LLAW6158 Contract Law

    • LLAW6159 Evidence

  4. Elective courses:
    Students should check the Department of Law course list and timetable for other LLM Arb&DR elective courses.

     

    Upon completion of this LL.M. programme, graduates are eligible to apply for the following professional accreditations:

    1. Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (headquartered in London) - Membership (MCIArb) or Fellowship (FCIArb**)

    2. Hong Kong Mediation Accreditation Association Limited - Accredited General Mediator (subject to completing Stage 2 and Stage 3 requirements as stipulated by the HKMAAL Mediation Accreditation Committee)

    3. Hong Kong Institute of Arbitrators - Associateship (AHKIArb) or Fellowship (FHKIArb)

     

    **Subject to achieving a minimum 55% (grade D+ from 2012-2013) in the LLM Arbitration Practice, Procedure & Drafting course (LLAW6157) and a minimum 70% (grade B- from 2012-2013) in the LLM Arbitration Award Writing course (LLAW6241); and a successful CIArb Peer Interview.
